You Might Be Surprised by the Core Gameplay Twists Unveiled in the Mortal Kombat 1 Hands-On Preview

Mortal Kombat 1 Offers Fresh Start for Franchise Story and Core Mechanics

Mortal Kombat 1 is being hailed as a new beginning for the franchise’s narrative, with Elder God Liu Kang leading the charge. The first two trailers show changes like Sub-Zero and Scorpion’s blood-brotherhood and Mileena’s rule over Edenia instead of her sister Kitana. After playing the game at Summer Game Fest Play Days, it’s also clear that the fresh start extends to the core mechanics. Here are some major additions:

  • Aerial combos: Every character has new aerial tools, and players can create longer combos by following up on certain launchers and continuing their offense push.
  • Kameo characters: These assist-only characters act as support when summoned, and each has three moves that depend on the directional input. They also have no limit of uses, but there is a cooldown timer. Players can insert these characters into combos to extend them or end them with extra flair.
  • Fatalities: No Mortal Kombat game would be complete without Fatalities. MK1 brings the gore with some gruesome finishing moves for each of the four playable main roster characters, as well as classic Fatalities for the Kameos.

Overall, Mortal Kombat 1 offers a new emphasis on creativity in combat, with a multitude of possibilities for both main and Kameo characters. The game is set to launch on September 19. GameSpot may earn a share of revenue for any purchases made through links shared on their site.
